Why Flat Ground Matters

Why Flat Ground Matters

Why Flat Ground Matters – More Than You Think

Flat ground is one of the most important — and most overlooked — elements of mobility parking design.

The Problem

Even small slopes can cause major issues.

A surface that looks “almost flat” may still:

Prevent hoist operation
Cause ramp instability
Create unsafe wheelchair movement
Reduce independence

Hoist Reality

If one side of a hoist touches the ground before the other:

Twisting can occur
Equipment can be damaged
The safety system may not function correctly

Not Just Getting Out — Getting Back In

Many designs only consider exit.

But the real test is:
Can the user return to the vehicle independently?

Design Requirements

No cross slope in access aisle
No uneven joins or patched surfaces
Fully level landing area beside vehicle

The Bottom Line

Flat ground is not a “nice to have.”
It is essential for safe and independent use.
